Before Submitting a Development Application in the Hunter Valley

  22 May 2014

Even a small residential steel garage may require a development application in the Hunter Valley region. In fact, there may be serious penalties if you commence work on your shed without previously getting the appropriate consent.

First and foremost, when you purchase your new steel garage kit it is important that you get all the relevant documentation for submission to your local council. It is highly recommended that you consult your local council or a building certifier prior to committing to a steel garage, farm shed or industrial building to see what is required and what restrictions may apply. In the Hunter Valley you will also need to:

  • Determine the land use zoning of the site
  • View Cessnock City Council's Policies and Procedures
  • Consult the council's most recent development guide
  • Complete the Development Application and submit to Cessnock council
  • See if you need a Construction Certificate, if so, you will need to submit an application

It really is important that you contact council to see what is required for you to building your steel structure on your property. It is best to get it right in the first place, rather than be implicated with fines in the future.
