Reducing Fire Danger around your Garage

  6 May 2014

Recent fires have caused devastation across many states of Australia. Sheds n Homes believe that being prepared is essential in protecting your home and reducing the fire danger in your steel garage. Here are a few pointers on how you can get your steel garage ready this summer season.

Safely Store Chemicals and Flammable Materials
Many chemicals require you to store them in an temperature controlled room and secure environment. In some cases, you will need to ensure your chemicals are separated from each other. Always comply with storage instructions provided by the chemical manufacturers. During the summer heat, it is also advisable that you remove or, at the very least, store flammable objects in cooler rooms and out of reach.

Maintain your Garden
If you maintain your garden throughout the year, it will be a much less painful job. Regularly remove dead and dried leaves, prune trees and foliage and make sure nothing is obstructing your steel garage.

Remove Debris
Remove dead leaves and any debris that may be on the roof of your steel structure or building up in gutters.

Seal all Gaps
Ensure all gaps are filled and invest in a sealant for your garage roof. Most buildings catch on fire due to embers getting into the buildings; if you have eliminated gaps in your steel garage then you will have reduced the fire danger of your building.

Have a Fire Plan in Place
Don't just talk about it, actually do it. Create a fire plan in case of emergency events that may occur. Talk it over with your family and devise a plan of action.

Reduce the risk of damage to your steel garage and follow the above tips. We also strongly suggest you contact your local fire department for further information on how you can get your family and property ready for fire season.
